Powys sought the simple life in rural England. This collection of musings on philosophy and religion reflect an unconventional, searching mind. Blending Christianity with Nietzsche, he declared himself “sometimes a Christian and sometimes a heathen.” His pessimistic brand of Christianity embraces death as “God’s best gift—the great inaction…eternal peace.”

About the Author

Theodore Francis Powys (1875–1953) was a British writer of novels and short stories, much like his older brother, John Cowper Powys. He spent most of his life in the rural area of Dorset, in southwestern England. His religious inclinations led him to write works of theological fantasy fiction such as Mr Weston’s Good Wine, Unclay, Kindness in a Corner, Fables, and God’s Eyes A-Twinkle. He chose to stop writing in 1936.
